After dinner, I give the plastic sleeve with the charred remnant of Malalaiâs picture to Gulshan, then retreat to my room to allow her and Ikrom some time to themselves. To be honest, I also want to take a look at the images on the SD card that was in my camera. Digging the card out of my pocket, I upload the images onto my laptop, then scan through them. And donât recognize a single shot.
This isnât my card.
I keep clicking through images. The senior girls at the Wad Qol Secondary Schoolâthe old school before it burned. Then I come to a shot of me in profile, looking out a wide window of the classroom I shared with Gulshan. More images of me, all of them candids. Plus, pics of Darya. Tariq in the kitchen at their house. The three of us at the kitchen table eating dinner. I zoom through them, looking to see what else is on the card. Finally, I come to a portrait of a young man, clean-shaven, dark hair with a curl that flops down over his forehead. Moody brown eyes. Full pouting lips. Sexy as hell. Awalmir. The young Pashtun man who was bent on seducing the photographer. In this case, Seema.
Holy shit! I had Seemaâs SD card in my camera.
I stare at my laptop screen, remembering that I was checking over my gear the night before last in Hama Bibiâs guest room. Just when I thought I had everything packed away, I found a card. This card.
Seemaâs card.
On the floor.
Which means Seema was in Hama Bibiâs guest room after she took these pictures. After the school was bombed. After Darya was killed.
My stomach clenches. Itâs all I can do to keep from throwing up.
Hama Bibi helped Seema and Awalmir get away?
No. Bibi told me she wasnât in Kabul then. And I believe her. The devastation on her face, in her voice, was too real. She couldnât have faked that.
Then, who was in that apartment?
Omar? The only possibility.
Wait! Slow down! This is just an SD card. Okay, so the card was in the apartment. That doesnât mean Seema was. Maybe it was Awalmir. Or someone else entirely who got ahold of her camera. Thereâs only one thing I know for sure: Iâve got to call Cerelli. Even if heâs not talking to me.
